North American Cinema Guild announces acquisition of the Reis and Cordeiro trilogy

The Cinema Guild has acquired the North American distribution rights to the films of António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro, essential filmmakers of Portuguese Cinema Novo, covering the duo’s three feature films — TRÁS-OS-MONTES (1976), ANA (1982), and ROSA DE AREIA (1989) — whose digitization and restoration were carried out by the Cinemateca Portuguesa–Museu do Cinema.

A program of these restored versions is planned under the retrospective António Reis & Margarida Cordeiro, Restored, taking place from May 8 to 17 at TIFF Cinematheque in Toronto, Canada. Cinema Guild also plans a touring retrospective of the filmmakers’ work across the United States and Canada in 2026, followed by digital home video releases.

This acquisition promises to shed new light on the work of this Portuguese duo, still little known outside Portugal. Over a small but remarkable body of work, António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro created a cinema deeply rooted in the language, myths, and dreams of the Trás-os-Montes region, now reaching a new continent.

The agreement was negotiated by Peter Kelly and Edward McCarry of Cinema Guild, with the Cinemateca Portuguesa, which represents the films on behalf of Cordeiro.

Cinema Guild is a global film distributor whose catalogue includes independent films and documentaries. Its most recent releases include DRY LEAF by Alexandre Koberidze, WHAT DOES THAT NATURE SAY TO YOU by Hong Sangsoo, and restored films by Luc Moullet and João César Monteiro.
