João César Monteiro Retrospective at MoMA with Prints and New Restorations from Cinemateca Portuguesa

From October 16 to November 6 in New York

The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) will host, starting next Thursday, a complete retrospective dedicated to João César Monteiro, featuring 35mm prints from the collection of Cinemateca Portuguesa and new digital restorations produced by the Cinemateca as part of the Portuguese cinema digitization plan funded by the PRR / Next Generation EU program.

Running until November 6, the retrospective “João César Monteiro: Symphonies of a Libertine” was organized by Francisco Valente, former programmer at the Cinemateca and currently Curatorial Assistant in the Film Department of this major institution. It will present, for the first time in the United States, the complete works of one of the most important Portuguese filmmakers of the 20th century, alongside Manoel de Oliveira.

The opening screening will feature Silvestre, preceded by previously unseen footage from tests the director conducted with actress Maria Cabral for an unfinished film (also part of Cinemateca’s collection and now digitized).

In addition to João César Monteiro’s films, the retrospective will include a selection of works that influenced his filmmaking. At the end of the program, a collection of the director’s writings and interviews with some of his closest collaborators is scheduled for publication.

This series marks the latest collaboration between Cinemateca Portuguesa and MoMA, following last year’s joint program of Portuguese cinema, The Ongoing Revolution of Portuguese Cinema.
