The entire collection of Jornal Nacional now available online

Cinemateca Portuguesa is making available for online viewing all 31 episodes of the Jornal Cinematográfico Nacional (JCN), the newsreel produced by Instituto Português de Cinema (IPC) between 1975 and 1977.

Created by the collective production units within the IPC, this was the first newsreel produced under democracy, offering a view of how the first days of freedom in Portugal were portrayed after the fall of Estado Novo. All the major events and key figures of the period—from the first free elections to factory and land occupations, as well as the many rallies and demonstrations of the time—were covered by the JCN. Although it employed a format inherited from less open times, it nevertheless fulfilled its role of documenting current events, this time also adopting a perspective of social critique. Like much of the cinema of the period, the JCN was very much a product of its time, which today can be revisited as a capsule of the post–25 April era.

Digitized by the National Archive of Moving Images (ANIM), the 31 episodes of the Jornal Cinematográfico Nacional are now available online via Cinemateca Digital or through the Portal Félix.
