The History of Portuguese Cinema in the Spotlight on RTP

Cinemateca Portuguesa and RTP are launching a new collaboration for the broadcast of a selection of major works of Portuguese cinema across RTP1, RTP2, and RTP Memória. Throughout the year, different moments in national film history will be highlighted, with films presented in newly digitized copies by Cinemateca Portuguesa, reinforcing a shared commitment to the preservation and dissemination of this heritage.

As an example of the works included in this partnership with RTP, and within the context of the celebrations marking the centenary of Carlos Paredes, RTP2 will screen during the month of February Os Verdes Anos (1963, Paulo Rocha). The film features the homonymous theme composed for it, which would become one of the most emblematic pieces in Paredes’ repertoire and in Portuguese cinema as a whole.

RTP2 will also chart a path through debut features by several filmmakers. Among the films to be shown are Barronhos: Quem Teve Medo do Poder Popular? (1976, Luís Filipe Rocha), O Mal-Amado (1974, Fernando Matos Silva), Sofia e a Educação Sexual (1974, Eduardo Geada), and Relação Fiel e Verdadeira (1987, Margarida Gil).

On RTP Memória, the channel will continue its collaboration with Cinemateca through the regular segments Hora Cinemateca and Cinemateca Digital, dedicated to other formats such as documentary short films, newsreels, amateur cinema, and home movies.

Highlighting the digitization work carried out by Cinemateca Portuguesa, this partnership will make it possible to watch major classics of Portuguese cinema on RTP, as well as to discover important works by national filmmakers.
