Director
Robert Kramer
Synopsis
Although its theme is the “class struggle” in Portugal, shown in archive footage, permanently guided by an off-screen commentary, Kramer considered this film to be the end point of his American period. As the years went by, he became perfectly aware that it was a dated work, but he never disowned it and said so in a letter in 1995: “I'm glad you're showing this film, because so many years later, it's like giving news of a place that doesn't exist, information about a time that really did exist”. At the time in Portugal, some thought of reviving censorship to ban the film.
Digitisation
